What is Broadband?

Broadband is a term used when talking about a fast internet connection. If your reading this article you are currently using the internet, whether it be an internet connection at your home or elsewhere.
You can connect to the internet using two different methods. Either through
Broadband, or the older ‘dial-up connection’. The dial-up connection uses a modem that plugs into your telephone line and with it being the older more dated way of connecting to the internet there are certain drawbacks compared to broadband. The main drawback is that the internet speed is considerably slower than that which uses a broadband connection, also with a dial-up connection you can’t uses your landline phone and browse the internet at the same time.

If your setting up the internet for the first time it’s advised that you sign up to a broadband package. With a broadband package you will typically pay a fixed fee on a monthly basis and for this you will have a connection to the internet 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Wireless Broadband

Anyone with a home broadband connection – as opposed to mobile broadband – can go wireless. Wireless broadband is not a different type of broadband- you just need the right kind of router, which you can either buy yourself or get from your ISP, to rid your home of a spaghetti junction of wires and ethernet cables.

How does wireless broadband differ from mobile broadband?

Despite what you might think wireless (wifi) broadband is not the same as mobile broadband. A home wireless broadband connection has a radius of about 100m from the wireless router whereas with mobile broadband you can get an internet connection wherever you have a signal on your mobile phone.

While a mobile connection might seem like the best option, download allowances are still very low compared to home broadband connections. If you want to make the most of your internet a home broadband connection is the best option.

Wireless broadband providers

There is no such thing as a ‘wireless broadband provider’ as all home broadband connections can be made wireless by connecting a wireless router to your modem and installing a wireless card in your computer, although many new computers, especially laptops, come with a wireless card already installed.

Some internet service providers (ISP’s) are more wireless friendly than others by offering free wireless routers and security packages when you sign up with them. These include BT, AOL and Be Broadband.

Are there advantages of wireless broadband?

The main advantage of wireless broadband is that you can connect a number of different computers, this way everyone can look at the websites of their choice and there’s no fighting for one computer to use the internet. If you use a laptop you have the freedom to move around and browse the internet in whatever room you like. You can also connect a number of different devices to the internet through the wireless router, for example phones and PDA’s.

Are there any disadvantages?

You must ensure that you have the correct level of security set up to protect your wireless network to ensure hackers, neighbours or even just passers by can’t use your internet without your permission. You may also sometimes experience a slower browsing experience than you would if you were hard wired into your modem. This is due to the signal strength weakening the further you are from the router.
